Here we are in the midst of another cold Massachusetts winter and like every winter here in New England many property owners will have major issues with ice dams causing roof leaks and shingle damage.
Although it may seem as though ice dams are an unstoppable force of nature, they are actually quite preventable. Attics and cathedral or vaulted ceiling areas that have been correctly incorporated into the overall building envelope don’t have problems with ice dams and icicles in the cold seasons. Through the use of proper insulation and ventilation techniques ice dams can be stopped cold (pun intended). (more…)

So you need a new roof and are trying to decide whether or not to try and save some money by having the new roof installed over an existing layer of roofing. This technique is quite common in many areas and many roofing contractors don’t see any problem with this method and have no problem trying to sell homeowners on a lay-over or go-over as this technique is called. They are wrong.
1.) Areas that have or had leaks can’t always be addressed properly
There is a good chance that your old roof had some problem areas including possible leak spots, whether you noticed them or not. Without tearing off the old roof and properly identifying these types of trouble spots and determining where the leak was coming from and traveling to it is impossible to tell what areas of your roof may need some special attention. My name is Joshua Johnson and I do sales and marketing for BCI and will be writing articles related to the roofing, siding, and gutter industry. Most of the information in the articles on this blog will be useful to people living in any part of the country or the world, for that matter, however some will seem biased towards the North East and Massachusetts in particular as that is where our company is located and does business.
BCI Contracting, Inc. is a privately held company headquartered in Brockton, MA. The company is owned by Jenner Arroyo who personally oversees each job that is undertaken by BCI. Steve Mathews and I handle the sales and marketing end of BCI and one of us will usually be the first BCI representative that a new customer will meet.
